How to Customize a Simple Lantern to Accent Your Space

In anticipation of painting our family room, I’ve gotten the itch to completely refresh all the decor in the space! This doesn’t always mean you have to go shopping for all new things, in fact, it can be fun (and more economical) to give items you already own a little facelift! This white metal lantern was actually used at our wedding back in 2020, so I was hesitant to alter it in a way that couldn’t be undone. Luckily, after some Pinterest inspiration, I decided there were many things I could do to make this lantern fit the feel I was going for without permanently altering something sentimental.

Our curtains are an olive green velvet, so I decided to order matching velvet ribbon, and some olive branches to snip down short enough to fit inside around a battery-operated pillar candle. Make sure to really do your research on faux leaves before you just order something; the colors and shading of green are all so different, that you’ll want to find the one that really goes with the style of your space. Olive leaves are dark green, short and skinny (so I knew I would need several branches), and of course have olive accents on them which I think really set the look off. You can purchase (or repurpose!) any lantern, but I am linking an affordable white one as well as all the items I used to achieve this look! I also HIGHLY recommend you use wire cutters to trim the branches or any other faux leaves you purchase; they just make trimming faster & so much easier.
